Sometimes it is referred to as “popcorn tea”. There are a lot of different origin stories of Genmaicha, some dating as far back to the 15th Century Japan, but the most probable and common story of Genmaicha is that toasted rice was added to Green Tea in the 1900s as a way of stretching tea during times of hardship. It is high in antioxidants and has an array of carotenoids and ascorbic acid.
